James Clarence Caffrey was always known to me as Lew. I never heard anyone call him anything different. I was told that he got the name from a cat that he had. He worked in the ship yard as an electrician. He was short, not skinny, but not fat, always had a smile but didn't say much, played cage ball instead of basketball [It was played in a cage and the only way you move with the ball was to bounce it. One or two hands didnt matter, but if you had the ball you were fair game. All I know is it was a physical game.] He got a $5. speeding ticket on the Magnolia New Jersey hill for riding his bike to fast. He told me he would get up in the morning and ride his bike to Atlantic City. When he got to the marsh land they would go like crazy so the misquitos wouldn't get them. They would walk the board walk and then ried home. About 65 miles each way, no tenspeed just work. I never saw him drive or if he ever owned a car. He always rode the buss to come to our house and walked from the bus stop. Mom and dad would take him out to dinner with us some times. Grama died of cancer when Kathy and I were young. On Sunday we would go to Laurel Springs and visit her in bed before she died. The last time that she and Lew came to our house they couldn't come in. The house was Qurinteened because Kathy had some desease, probably got it from me. Lew would help my dad some times and got work with him. When we moved into 701 White Horse Pike Lew and I got to tare out an old room in the basement. When mom got involved with genealogy she would take Lew with her to go see dads family.
My cousin, Elizabeth Suzanne Herbst Thomas told me that on Christmass eve they alwasys had fried oasters and potatoe salad. She said the Vaughans went to church at the Salome Methodiist church. Lew was in the Masons. he was a band member, the "Kidash something", Yorkrite massonic, Blue Lodge. I know he played the French Horn, and he might have also played the corinet and flute. Lew and grandmom would go out sometiimes to the Quarker store buy a quart of icecram and eat it.
